180 Monroe-Big Lake

Construction on the first Habitat home in Big Lake is now complete! Habitat for Humanity staff, project sponsors and volunteers celebrated the Big Lake home’s groundbreaking with a ceremony on July 30th, 2009.

Representative Mary Kiffmeyer was in attendance, as were members of the Big Lake City Council and Staff to help kickoff the project and welcome the partner family to Big Lake.

The home will be built under the local supervision of Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity (CMHFH) in partnership with Bakken Building & Remodeling and the Jenson family, who will become the homeowners through a zero interest home mortgage. The Big Lake project is dedicated in memory of Millard Fuller, who founded Habitat for Humanity with his wife in 1976. Through Millard’s vision and leadership, Habitat for Humanity has built over 300,000 homes and served 1.5 million people in over 3000 communities. Sadly and unexpected, Millard passed away February 2009 at the age of 74.

This project’s principal sponsor, Thrivent Financial, will fund 65 percent of the home’s costs through its Thrivent Builds partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Cargill Kitchen Solutions of Big Lake also spoke, presenting the habitat home with a $15,000 check. Before officially breaking ground, Pastor Steve Ganzkow-Wold from Saron Lutheran Church blessed the site and the workers who will be working on the site.

The Jenson family was in their new home just in time for the holidays! The home dedication took place on Wednesday, November 18th. The closing was on November 24th. Congratulations to the Jenson family!
