Hussein Farah and Hindi Kosar's Story

During the late 1990's in Somalia, the laws were lost and tribal governance returned to power because of the removal of the Somalian president by the people. Families turned against each other and violence exploded in the streets to where it wasn't safe to open your front door. Hussein Farah fled from Somalia to a refugee camp in Nairobi, Kenya and then left for the United States with his Mother, Four Brothers and Four Sisters in 1999.

In 2002, Hindi's husband (Hussein's brother) was killed at the capital during the war and she was left to provide for her seven children. She then left for Kenya and soon left for the United States. In 2006 she moved to Minnesota from Tennessee with Hussein. Since that time they have been living together to combine their financial resources and provide a healthy environment for the children. In April of 2009, they were married and began their homeownership process with Habitat.

Since losing her job at Jennie-O, finding new employment has been difficult for Hindi so they are forced to live in an apartment in an unsafe neighborhood with gang activities. While they are awaiting their new home on 11th Avenue SE, their children have been volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club in St. Cloud as tutors and helping the community they are growing to love.
